Welcome to the Global Report: our weekly column of the most important issues happening across the planet. From politics to war, monarchies to dictatorships, and everything in-between, we’ve got it covered. It’s world news, Playboy.com style.

The US is racing against a deadline to name a Presidential nominee to head the World Bank. Multiple names floating around include Susan Rice (US Ambassador to the UN), and Lawrence Summer (former adviser to President Barak Obama). The choice will mark an important step for Obama due to the influence this monetary body commands on the global level. Rice has had a tough stance within the UN, though rumors of her eying the soon-to-be vacant Secretary of State position, post-Clinton, could keep her off the ballot.

A 7.4-magnitude earthquake hit the length of Mexico on Tuesday cutting off power and damaging homes and infrastructure. While about a dozen injuries have been reported, there have been no confirmed deaths.

Poland released a report yesterday claiming its shale gas reserves are 85 percent less than the US Dept. of Energy estimate from last year. Shale gas, a form of natural gas derived from unconventional rock-clay formations, is expected to be a major supply of energy in the future. It’s somewhat surprising that Poland would contradict a US study in this area, as Poland has the most to lose from America extracting companies and potential money from European nations wishing to switch their supply from Russian oil.

Alleged racially motivated shootings at a Jewish School in France have been the latest controversy to President Nicolas Sarkozy’s path to the national elections next month. The attack, which killed three boys and a rabbi, are being reported as France’s deadliest anti-Semitic violence to take place in 30 years. The gunman, who jumped to his death after a police raid this morning, is also reported to have killed three soldiers. We imagine this will make a strong impact upon the upcoming campaign platforms, especially from opposition leaders looking to steal votes away from the incumbent.

Former UN Secretary General and UN-Arab League envoy on the Syrian Crisis, Kofi Annan, spoke with the UN Security Council last Friday urging a resolution between the 15-member states to take action and end the bloodshed in the country. Twice previously, China and Russia have utilized their Permanent Member vetoes, effectively killing any diplomatic response.

In Syria proper, gun violence reached record heights in the capital Damascus, with both government and rebel forces trading blows. Last week the use of car bombs killed at least 27 people. The Red Cross has been urging daily peace treaties in order to treat the wounded. We expect the latest UN Security council peace resolution, spearheaded by France, to make in-roads with Russia; but it may still hit a blockade when it comes to China who for the most part declines to intervene in other country’s affairs.

Eritrea lodged a complaint and request for intervention to the UN on Friday, stating that neighboring Ethiopia attacked three military bases within the East African country’s borders. The two impoverished countries, whose war in 1998 caused casualties in the tens of thousands, are militarily mismatched with Ethiopia having noticeable advantage, as well as an arguably biased ally in the US.

Friday’s anti-Sudan protests in Washington took a Hollywood-spin when actor George Clooney was arrested outside the Sudanese Embassy. The protests are in response to the Sudanese government withholding vital food aid to violence-torn regions bordering South Sudan.

The new Eurasian Economic Community (aka the Eurasian Union), a customs union comprised of former Soviet states, met on Monday in Moscow as it attempted to lure additional members. Spearheaded by Russia, the union contains oil heavyweight Kazakhstan among others. The announcement of such a group last year caused analysts to question Russia’s motives in terms of finding new ways to control its spheres of influence. While the idea is clearly based off of the European Union, it wouldn’t be surprising to see this morph into a militarized security agreement once the structural framework is put in place.

Bo Xilai, one of China’s fast rising political stars and an assumed frontrunner for this fall’s presidential elections, has been dropped by the ruling communist party over visiting a US consulate in Chengdu. The visit, which was maintained as a ‘scheduled visit,’ caused some citizens and politicians to believe he was defecting. We anticipate this development will throw the election into pseudo-chaos, with several high-ranking or ambitious officials attempting to fill Xilai’s shoes.

In other regional news, North Korea is attempting to launch a space missile, which is being called out by opponents as a guise for an ICBM, long-range missile test. Such action would violate the country’s recent pact for aid with the US, as well as a UN Security Council resolution forbidding the country from doing so. If this keeps up, we’re going to have to add a new section to the Global Report solely to follow this country’s weekly decision to be progressive or not.

George Tupou V, the King of Tonga died in Hong Kong on Sunday at age 63. The King, who was best known for changing the South Pacific country from a Monarchy to a Democracy, will be succeed by his brother, Crown Prince Tupouto’a Lavaka.

In Australian creature feature news, a man was bitten by a shark while surfing on Tuesday afternoon off of the Gold Coast. The man is alive and recovering after surgery to his leg and ankle.

Director: Gary Ross
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Studio: Lionsgate Films

Hollywood hopes The Hunger Games erupts into the next Twilight-size money machine. Based on the first of Suzanne Collins’s trilogy of best-sellers, the flick is set in a dog-eat-dog dystopia in which a teenage girl must compete against 23 other kids in a brutal fight for survival—all televised as must-see entertainment. The much-anticipated adaptation stars Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson and Lenny Kravitz. “It’s harrowing, riveting, terrifying material, but there’s also emotional depth,” says director Gary Ross. “Shooting scenes such as a girl sent through a burning forest or one we filmed vertically at the height of a 150-foot tree was really compelling. It all hinged on Jennifer Lawrence, who is a freak of nature. She floored me. If audiences get the sense that they’re walking in her shoes and they care about her character as much as they did in the book, that’s the measure of success.”

Baseball season is upon us. The boys of summer are back. All this week Playboy.com will be previewing the upcoming season team by team. Part one looks at the clubs well out of contention and what they need to do to get back into the thick of things.

Baltimore Orioles

The AL East is no joke in baseball circles; it’s a serious division for serious folks with four legit teams vying for contention. The odd man out is of course the Orioles who gambled last year on high risk/reward veteran free agent signings and lost, unable to restock the farm by flipping less than stellar numbers put up by temporary stop-gap solutions. This year won’t be much different. A lot of raw talent lives in their rotation, a lot of aged inconsistency in their lineup, but a fire sale come July is to be expected either way.

Best Asset: Unproven pitching depth. Look out for: C Matt Wieters. Strategy: Sell. Sell. Sell. Projected Finish: 5th in the AL East.

Cleveland Indians

The Indians managed to take advantage of a deteriorating AL Central last season and finish second albeit miles behind the Tigers and with a losing record. Though they lost one half of the Cabrera combo that turned an inordinate number of double plays, the Indians are defensively sound. They can stay in ball games, they just can’t win them on the back of a young Carlos Santana, an inconsistently healthy Grady Sizemore and a sleeping giant like Travis Hafner. They can get guys on the base paths, they just can’t get them off them.

Best Asset: Their Defense. Look out for: SP Derek Lowe. Strategy: Things could actually work out for Cleveland if they were playing in the National League. They’re not. They’re built for small ball in a big ball league. Projected Finish: 4th in the AL Central.

Houston Astros

It might be too easy to make an Apollo 13 joke here but there is most definitely a problem in Houston. After Carlos Lee (who is as old as time as far as baseball is concerned), Astros players become hard to tell apart. A 100 plus losses is a whole lot to handle for a club with only a few major prospects and even less on field talent so the road is long for ‘Stros fans. Like five to eight years long unless a cash cow dies on their doorstep.

Best Asset: Ummm… Look out for: SS Jed Lowrie. Strategy: Patience. The upside is not much money remains on the books for the Astros and some good free agent classes are on the horizon. Lowrie could be the start of a core; use these swoon year draft picks wisely. Projected Finish: 6th in NL Central.

Oakland Athletics

The A’s have been playing the rebuilding game for some time now, tinkering and tweaking the farm and the big club hoping to find something that works. This offseason again saw them selling most of their top tier talent but they showed forward progress with the signing of Cuban import Yoenis Cespedes. He is the flagship and future of this club; the talent is there in all facets, it just needs a few years to grow.

Best Asset: Talented youth. Look out for: OFs Cespedes and Josh Reddick. Strategy: Patience. Projected Finish: 3rd in the AL West.

Pittsburgh Pirates

The Bucs acquired the closest thing they’ve had to an ace in a while this offseason in A.J. Burnett. Six years in the hard hitting AL East were unkind to the veteran who finally parted ways with the division owning a 4.38 ERA and periphery numbers going all the wrong ways. A return to pre-AL East form might bolster Pittsburgh’s play and if Erik Bedard can find his fastball again, a few wins could be found there but the talent all around just isn’t there to overcome other rising stars in the Central.

Best Asset: CF Andrew McCutchen. Look out for: 2B Neil Walker. Strategy: McCutchen, Walker and Jose Tabata stand as a core you can build on. Burnett and Bedard could be flipped to a contender midseason to sure up the Pirates’ weak left side. Projected Finish: 5th in the NL Central.

San Diego Padres

What to say about the Padres. Talent bought and sold with little improvement. They shipped their best young prospect in Mat Latos to the Reds, their franchise bat to the Red Sox and are left with a piecemeal staff of youngsters and veterans nowhere near ready to contend for anything but last place. The haul from the Reds is second tier at best, a mix of major league ready but decidedly average players and it will be a few years yet before the youth movement is ready to roll.

Best Asset: CF Cameron Maybin. Look out for: C Nick Hundley. Strategy: Play the waiting game ‘til Hundley, Headley and Maybin hit the same page. Sell high on Quentin, Hudson, Kotsay and Hermida if their numbers are good come the deadline. Projected Finish: 5th in NL West.

Seattle Mariners

King Felix still sits atop his throne in Seattle but the supporting cast thins out considerably after that. His 14-14 record is telling of the talent around him; the Mariners finished dead last in runs scored, RBIs, batting average, slugging and on base percentage last season. Credit that to infallible Ichiro finally losing a few steps on both sides of the plate and the Chone Figgins experiment going horribly awry. The addition of the highly touted Jesus Montero should account for a few more wins in 2012 but not enough to put them in the same stratosphere as the Rangers or Angels and at the cost of a young solid arm in Michael Pineda.

Best Asset: SP Felix Hernandez. Look out for: C/DH Jesus Montero. Strategy: It might be time to consider what kind of haul Ichiro can bring in the July market. Or Felix. Or both and start from scratch. Projected Finish: 4th in the AL West.

Sure, she sucked when she performed on Saturday Night Live. So did Jimmy Fallon, and you gave him a second chance, right? Del Rey’s highly stylized ballads—she seems to have wandered, anesthetized, off the set of a David Lynch pilot—toy with the idea of the “bad girl,” leveraging her appeal as a way out of her dead-end small town. When she coos, “God, you’re so handsome,” she knows just what you want to hear. Posing as a femme fatale is safe these days, but with her red dress and “tar-black soul,” Del Rey’s character is more like Cora in James M. Cain’s The Postman Always Rings Twice—an out-and-out cock tease. She split the world into two sides before she even released her first album, Born to Die. Brilliant.

Remember Kings of Leon, the Tennessee band that was going to bring back Southern music? Pretty soon they were writing songs about how boring it was to date models, and then they walked offstage because a pigeon crapped on them. That’s not exactly the rebel spirit. Now come the Alabama Shakes, a soul quartet led by Brittany Howard. She’s a shouter, and she turns each track on Boys & Girls into a roller-coaster ride—climbing up and up as she slowly drawls out lyrics, then plummeting as she roars a crescendo. Until recently she worked as a mail carrier for the USPS, and Alabama Shakes songs take a determined view of hard times. In “Goin’ to the Party,” she sings, “There’s gonna be dancing, and there’s gonna be a fight,” and she sounds equally excited about both.

AZEALIA BANKS

Courtesy of Matt Barnes

Smiling like a kid, wearing a Mickey Mouse sweater, her hair in braided pigtails, Azealia Banks might look innocent—that is, until she warns you that it wouldn’t be difficult for her to seduce your girl. “I guess that cunt gettin’ eaten,” she repeats. Banks mixes themes of innocence and sexual candor in the video for “212,” which adds a house bounce and a Jamaican accent to a hip-hop beat. Her mother once asked in exasperation, “Azealia, does every song have to be about sex?” The 20-year-old Banks—who grew up in Harlem, loving Broadway show tunes more than rap—is now making her first full album and recently declared her bisexuality. Not every one of her songs will be about sex, she says emphatically, “but some will.” We’re thankful for that.

AVICII

Courtesy of Dan Reid

Skrillex recently became an electronic music star by taking a jackhammer approach to house music—every jarring beat dices your ear holes. For subtlety and beauty, we must turn to his occasional collaborator Avicii, a cherub-cheeked young Swede born as Tim Bergling, who guested on David Guetta’s last album. In a musical style dedicated to electrode shocks, Avicii—he also records under a few other pseudonyms—adds playfulness: funky R&B in “My Feelings for You,” a lightly skipping beat in “Bromance,” a whistling hook in “Street Dancer.” And on “Levels,” he builds a riot of tempo, color and harmony around a bluesy Etta James sample. There’s even a Skrillex remix, if you want it on blast.

PO PO

Courtesy of Noah Conopask

Zeb Malik loves the “desperate, dark, badass” quality of the Jesus and Mary Chain’s late-1980s punk rock, but the distorted guitars remind him of a more spiritual sound—Muslim prayers broadcast on “busted-out speakers” in the Philadelphia mosques where his Pakistani parents prayed. Malik has a gift for turning noise into hooks, and it’s paying off: His band PO PO released a few scuzzy songs and rapidly went from playing for 30 people in Philly to 30,000 in Portugal, opening for Nine Inch Nails. On Dope Boy Magick, the six-foot-six Malik adds South Asian drone notes to aggressive, simple, garbled songs that can frighten or unnerve you, even when they sound as though they’re coming from your sock drawer. This is a new kind of music—call it Islamabadass.

QUIET IS THE NEW LOUD

Courtesy of Lourdes Delgado/EMI

As far back as the Velvet Underground, experimentation was synonymous with ear-shattering volume. Now, if you want to hear invention, you have to listen more closely. Great new electronic albums by Nicolas Jaar, pictured (Space Is Only Noise), who was raised in Chile and New York City; Tim Hecker (Ravedeath, 1972) from Montreal; the German musician Alva Noto (summvs, composed with ambient legend Ryuichi Sakamoto); and Oneohtrix Point Never (Replica), the recording name of Brooklyn-based Daniel Lopatin, deploy small variations of quiet and silence, with rippling results that are dreamy and dislocating. These adventurers don’t want to shock you. Quite the contrary; when told that his music was conducive to sleep, Jaar replied, “That’s exactly what I want.”

CHANO DOMINGUEZ

Miles Davis’s Kind of Blue, made in 1959, is the top-selling jazz album of all time, so anyone who covers it is immediately suspected of trying to cash in on a classic. But if Spanish pianist Chano Domínguez was aiming for a big payday, he wouldn’t have made Flamenco Sketches with such an unusual lineup: a bassist, a singer, a percussionist and a hand clapper, known as a palmero. (Quick, name a famous jazz hand clapper. We’ll wait.) Kind of Blue is a famously cool record, but Domínguez adds hot Iberian rhythms, moving from thoughtfulness to a strut to an exuberant frolic that makes the live audience forget their manners and holler.

MR. MUTHAFUCKIN’ EXQUIRE

Are you tired of rappers who act like investment bankers? Who rhyme about their Audemars Piguet watches and tweet about their partnerships with Louis Vuitton? When did rap become a tool of the one percent? Meet Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire, a down-and-passed-out underground MC from the Brooklyn projects who raps about bottom-shelf vodka, riding the subway and watching porn on Cinemax. He was enrolled in a school for the gifted but was soon robbing kids with a box cutter and dropped out in 10th grade. You can hear his smarts and his problems on two recent mixtapes, which bring to mind DMX’s dark meditations and the Geto Boys’ surreal hallucinations. If you gave him an expensive watch, he’d probably trade it for a case of Hennessy and a MetroCard.

GARY CLARK JR.

Courtesy of Myriam Santos/WB Records

For a tennis player, 28 is old, but for a bluesman, it’s still adolescent, if not embryonic. And Gary Clark Jr. might be young and vital enough to raise the blues out of its long, long slumber and back into the spotlight. The stylish and strikingly handsome singer, guitarist and songwriter from Austin, Texas cites influences that include Stevie Wonder, the Ramones and Tupac, some of which you can hear in his soulful falsetto ballads. But his roughhouse electric tracks land right in the pocket of blues tradition. Notice how he gets right to the point in the first line of his bruising song “Bright Lights,” for instance: “Woke up in New York City, lying on the floor.”

BLAXPLOITATION JIVE

Once or twice a month, sometimes more frequently, the anonymous music freaks who run Blaxploitation Jive (blaxploitationjive.blogspot.com) post about a soul, blues or jazz dignitary worthy of greater recognition, such as Andre Williams (pictured). There are a lot of similar sites, but none is as thorough; not long ago, a post about the Meters, the great New Orleans funk band, included links to more than 40 different albums, compilations and bootlegs, most of them out of print. Lots of sites inform you about music you’ve missed; this one delivers it into your hands.

SERENGETI

Courtesy of Jacob Hand

“Hip-hop is so depressing to me,” Serengeti once said. “It’s the same redundant ideas.” None of this underground Chicago MC’s ideas, spoken in a casual and unexcited voice, could be dismissed as familiar: not his song about White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, nor the one about a neglectful dad who reconciles with his son by shooting smack with him and certainly not his concept album about a middle-aged telephone booth repairman who adores actor Brian Dennehy. If you agree that mainstream rap sucks, buy a copy of Family & Friends. Serengeti deserves at least a small cult following.

ERIC CHURCH

Courtesy of Capitol Nashville

Two songs that mention Jesus in the title but three that mention alcohol (and that’s not counting “I’m Gettin’ Stoned”)—that’s the ratio of hell-raising to heaven praising we like to see in our country stars. On his third album, Chief, North Carolina singer and songwriter Eric Church reverses Nashville’s trend of neutering its men, proclaiming his sinful ways in a high, nasal, unapologetically mountain voice, pushed by guitar chords and crashing drums any Rolling Stones fan would recognize. While “Drink in My Hand” supplants all previous happy-hour anthems, Church also knows how dark it is at the bottom of a bottle: “I’ve thrown a punch or two, and gave a few black eyes, but Jack Daniel’s kicked my ass again last night.”

After dominating this year’s CES, Nokia’s first LTE smartphone Lumia 900 is set to release early April. Donning an impressively large 4.3-inch touchscreen display, Windows Phone 7.5 Mango Commercial Release 2 (Mango + LTE) operating system, a Carl Zeiss enhanced wide angle camera lens and sleek thin .45 inch body, your clunky iPhone will almost look archaic in comparison.

The Lumia 900 was designed specifically with the U.S. in mind as it will be available on AT&T’s 4G LTE network, but the model will also be accessible in countries where LTE providers are not yet available. While there is only speculation on what one of these phones will run you, judging by past accessibly priced models, the Lumia 900 won’t cost you an arm and a leg, a relief for us smartphone addicts.

Kiefer Sutherland doesn’t get the chance to torture any bad guys in Fox’s Touch. But the erstwhile Agent Bauer is so impressive in his new role, you almost don’t miss the ass-kicking. He’s now playing Martin Bohm, widowed father of an 11-year-old mute boy. Touch is no sappy Lifetime sob story, though. It’s from Heroes creator Tim Kring, lover of all things metaphysical, so naturally young Jake has a superpower: He can divine the future by identifying patterns the rest of us miss. Martin’s role: to figure out what his son’s clues mean and, if necessary, take action to prevent disaster or help facilitate a felicitous outcome. In the pilot (which previewed in January to impressive ratings), Martin finds himself helping a British man track down a lost cell phone; future episodes deal with story lines both momentous (an astronaut in peril) and mundane (a kid is teased by classmates). Kring doesn’t soft-pedal his “we’re all in this together” message, and this will turn off the Bill Mahers among us, skeptical of a higher power. But if you want to believe, Touch has the potential to be a compelling anthology—and a great showcase for Sutherland’s considerable acting talents. (Four bunnies)—Josef Adalian

BEHIND THE SCENES TIM KRING SPEAKS

PLAYBOY: Will fans of Heroes recognize any of that show’s DNA in Touch?

KRING: In a lot of ways, Touch has a distilled quality of something in Heroes, which is this idea of interconnectivity and global consciousness. But Heroes usually had a big event the story would be centered around. These stories are about the very small.

PLAYBOY: Heroes started big but quickly lost viewers. Lessons learned?

KRING: We were aware this time not to get wrapped up in a serialized story so complicated that people couldn’t follow it. I want to do stand-alone stories that have a beginning, a middle and an end.

PLAYBOY: Surely something else is going on besides a kid with special abilities.

KRING: The character at the heart of this series has an amazing ability that borders on the supernatural. You really can’t do that without opening the door to more stories out there.

In January’s round-up of the Detroit Auto Show we introduced you to the 2013 Bentley GT V8, a luxury sports coupe with a flair for traditional touring specifications. Today we bring you one of the biggest pieces of news out of the Geneva Car Show, the world’s first Bentley SUV, the EXP 9 F ‘Falcon.’

Named for the eponymous bird, the Falcon delivers the style, grace, and power associated with this speed demon of the sky. The EXP, or Experimental vehicle, has been Bentley’s performance concept line for decades highlighted by the 2001 EXP Speed 8, taking first in the Le Mans race of 2003.

Like most concepts it’s not aimed at immediate production; Bentley has made it clear that the purpose of this vehicle is to test the reception of such a radical shift in direction for the company.

Further to this, Bentley has stated that this SUV has the potential, if produced, to become the first of a third model line to complement its established Continental and Mulsanne ranges. While its other production models have been quite conservative in terms of detailing and changes from one generation to the next, the design team has been open to progressive and adaptive ideas in building this vehicle from the ground up. Both muscular and refined at the same time, this car is just as much at home at top speed as it is arriving at a black-tie affair.

The interior uses the same handcrafted elements seen in Bentley’s other models: saddle leather, hardwood, and refined metals such as bronze, aluminum, and gunmetal. This is in addition to brilliant features such as built-in champagne cooler and uniquely-British design motifs.

Tech-wise, the dash incorporates touchscreens and 3D navigation alongside certain analogue instruments that are a traditional throwback in the car maker’s storied history.

The exciting part for us with the Falcon is the proposed specs Bentley has cooked up. While we were initially hesitant about how a company known for luxury performance would handle moving into the SUV arena (mainly whether they would reduce the engine power options) Bentley surprised us by stating that while it could make do with the new 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 or even go hybrid, it would probably go with a twelve-cylinder. Yes you heard us, a W12, 6.0-liter in a sports utility vehicle!

The potential horses with this option would be approximately 600, which could deliver an astounding 590 pounds per foot of torque. These stats are quite similar to the SUV Ferrari has been proposing for the past couple of years, but which the Italian company ultimately decided against. This brings up the argument whether primarily sports and luxury car makers should diversify for sales or stick to their core demographics, but we’ll come back to that in a couple of weeks.

All in all this is one beautiful vehicle, and though it received some varied reviews at Geneva, it could still make it to the road with a few changes (primarily a more efficient engine and smaller size). Personally, we think it’s great, but aren’t most things when they undoubtedly cost over 100K?

ENGINE: W12, 6.0-Liter twin-turbo

HORSES: 600 HP

TORQUE: 590 lb-ft
